The top 4 games that emerged from our large brainstorming session:

  • A wheelchair type game

  • Musical chairs

  • A monkey bar room

  • A dodgeball type game

  • A spinning laser similar to Wipeout

Thinking through these games further we came up with a few different game modes each could involve

Wheelchair Game

Game Modes

  • Games similar to Mario Party minigames

  • Racing

  • Bumping each other off of platforms

  • Falling and manipulate the object to keep it falling, collaborative Tetris

  • Slot car races

  • "Chairbone" Champ similar to the popular Trombone Champ game. Use one wheel to control pitch and another to control the volume

  • Puzzle games where shapes need to be moved and rotated

Implementation

  • Wheels provide too analog inputs with both a variable speed and direction of rotation

  • resistance like an exercise bike to make it more work to push wheels

  • proof of concept could be sufficient to make chairs and an interface and use them to play modded Mario Party ROMs

Musical Chairs

Game Modes

  • Classic musical chairs, each player needs to sit on their own color when the music stops

  • Grid like games of sit on the blue avoid the red

Implementation

  • Use Grid sensors and lights

  • Would have benches around the edge of the room to avoid sharp corners of individual chairs

  • Could have a curved bench around a pillar like in Hide

Monkey bar Game

Game Modes

  • Game mode similar to Climb

  • Can have pattern games

  • Could add buttons along the wall to hit with feet and lasers to dodge

  • Can have floor is lava / grounders mode. Where you can run along the floor for some time and then have to jump up and out of the way

Implementation

  • Sensitive bars

  • Lights inside the bars

  • Lasers and buttons

  • Would be challenging to make this game accessible to 3.5ft - 7ft tall players

  • Would require significant structural work to install at a location

Dodgeball Game

Game Modes

  • Dodging all the balls

  • Stopping all the balls from hitting the wall

  • Can make it competitive in that each has their own portion of wall to dodge on or to protect

  • Could make cleanup of balls a portion of the game (throw them at central target)

  • Light up a pattern and that is where people have to block

Implementation

  • Launchers shooting balls across the room

  • A sensor on the back wall to detect balls

  • Buttons to press and additional challenges

  • Can have a slanted floor so the balls roll back towards the launchers to be reloaded

  • A sensor to ensure that the players don't move too far from the wall (can't have players stand right beside the launcher

Spinning Laser Game

Game Modes

  • Spinning laser with one arm low and one high, increasing in speed

  • Can have the laser spinning and moving up and down in a pattern

  • Can add additional challenges along the walls

Implementation

  • Either a central column with lasers mounted that spin.

  • Or having an array of laser modules with sensors in the middle and the lasers just move in such a way to simulate spinning

About Our Project

Our team has partnered with Activate to create a new gaming room to keep adults and children active. Our "Protect" room features engineering design concepts from various Mechatronics engineering coursework such as controls, circuits, and machining. Stay tuned to get updates on our design process!
